Likely a quirk of gnome.

You'll need to get to a concole (X not running) to do this:
First get to the console. If you login graphically, open a terminal, su
to root, type 'init 3 (no quotes) and login as user. If you already go
to runlevel 3, logout of your X session.
Logged in as the user, type 'mv .gnome .gnome.old' without quotes. You
can also rename .gnome.old to anything else you want it to be, just
don't use something that already exists or you lose whatever it was.
Start x back up (either with startx or log out and log in as root and
type 'init 5' no quotes).
The upside is everything is fixed. The downside is, you would lose any
preferences you had set. That's the choice one has to make on occasion
when using gnome.

I like to get behind early. That way I have more time to catch up.
