athlon, can't boot 7.2, what to do?

the release notes say use rescue mode to install a 686 kernel.  didn't say 
quite how.  i guessed:

rpm --root /mnt/sysimage -ivh --replacepkgs --replacefiles 
/mnt/source/kernel-2.4.7-10.i686.rpm

was that wrong?  now i get a screenful of new problems.  am i still having 
athlon related problems, or what?
