Your friend hasn't tried to recompile his kernel lately, has he?

This would be a symptom of the previous problem. If the kernel he booted
with doesn't have proper support for IDE hard disks, then he won't get
very far trying to mount or fsck them. However, his kernel and initrd
would still load and *try* to start the system.

Or just unavailable... Where was /dev/hdd1 supposed to be mounted?
