During boot a file called setsysfont (in /sbin) gets called and royally
screws things up. I comment out everything except the first & last lines
and everything works like I want it to work.
Alternatively you could rename the file and make one (almost) empty with
the same name. All it really needs to keep things moving is the very
first line (the one that says #!/bin/sh) and the execute bit set on the
file itself.
