You do need a font server.  Red Hat's font server is called XFS.  I too 
wanted to do the exact same things that you want to do and it bit me in 
the ass.  I removed it and rebooted and it would not boot into X at all.  
I eventually had to reinstall.  I wouldn't do it. :)
