new kernel == minghetty failing (init: id x respawn too fast)

i've just realized that i need the 2.4 kernel that supports DRM (whatever the hell that is...;) in order to use the latest release of xfree86 (which is 4.1.0).

so i configured and compiled linux-2.4.10.  installed it, ran lilo, etc.

now it boots up, but when init starts, it give me:
init: id x respawn too fast etc, etc
for x=0; x<6; ++x

what do i do?  what is causing this?  i recompiled the kernel disabling loopback something or other, and now when linux boots, init starts and i don't even get the "respawn too fast" error anymore.  init just freezes when it starts to run.

any idea?  why can linux be such a pain sometimes...=(

thanks for the help,
christopher
