Remote Machine monitors

Does anyone know of a dock app or something small that will run in a desktop
that can monitor heartbeat and other services runnning on a remote computer.
I am trying to find a program that I can leave running on my computer to
monitor a server without taking up too much space. I seem to remember an
afterstep applet, but can not find it anywhere.
