Actually, I think the problem is that you've not entered the
protocol & path. For instance, if I want to read:
/home/httpd/html/manual/index.html
I'd enter either at command line w3m
file:///home/httpd/html/manual/index.html
or in w3m, hit G for goto, & enter the same path. Just tell it
if you're looking for & where it is as you would a page on the
Web.
