Figured it out

wrong permissions

[I have no name! croydon scollyer]$ finger scollyer
finger: scollyer: no such user.
[I have no name! croydon scollyer]$ groups
scollyer
[I have no name! croydon scollyer]$ ls -ltr /etc/passwd /etc/shadow
-r--------    1 0        root         1667 Jul 29 22:20 /etc/shadow
-rw-------    1 0        root         1967 Jul 29 22:20 /etc/passwd
[I have no name! croydon scollyer]$ chmod +r /etc/passwd
