Hope the following helps.
I installed jdk-1.3.1 under 7.2 (now running under 7.3). The only thing
I did was modify my path to look like this:
/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/java/jdk1.3.1/bin:/home/john/bin
I installed via rpm, using Sun's directions at:
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/install-linux-sdk.html#install-pkg
I've never had a hitch doing it this way.
