COMPAQ PROLIANT installation problem

Hi

I am trying to install RedHat Linux to a COMPAQ Proliant DL380 server. It
has an integrated compaq raid array controller. With 3 RAID 5 drives and an
online spare.

If I do a fresh install of RedHat 7.1 letting the installation partition the
drive. Everything works fine. However if I use up2date to update all the
relevant packages it refuses to boot any longer. It starts to boot the
kernel and then kernel panics. The last few messages are

mount: error 19 mounting ext2
pivotroot: pivot_root (/sysroot, /sysroot/initrd) failed: 2
Freeing unused kernel memory: 280k freed
kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel

Booting the previous kernel gets it going again.

I have also tried fresh installs of RedHat 7.2 and 7.3 and they won't boot
at all. They give similar error messages. Except the mount error is

mount: error 6 mounting ext3

I have booted in rescue mode and the filesystem is there and looks ok,
including /initrd.

I really need to have a fully up to date system as it will eventually be
exposed to the internet.

Anyone any ideas?

Regards

Alexis Taylor
