Re: Linux question

Hello,

I think that you will find that Solaris 8 is the last release of Solaris that Sun will put out on the Intel platform, Solaris 9 is only sparc. Sun has their own Linux distro in the works so that will do the replacement for the Sol 8 Intel OS.

Solaris is a nice way to learn Unix, everything from the basics, but for programming its much easier to just get RH Linux 7.3 slap it on using GRUB boot loader while dual booting which btw is friendlier (had to object :) ) and that does the trick.

But nonetheless coming from a Sol 6/7/8 background as a student I was prepared in the basics so Linux felt like a holiday at the beach. As for shells I don't think that it really matters, most of shells that are on Unix are available on Linux including a clone ksh. The bash shell will be your friend.

Cheers,

Aly.

To Redhat

I'm currently just starting programming at Uni and have been advised that
the programs should be developed and tested on Unix at the university. We
can develop on windows at home but must test on Unix first. I've never used
this before, but was wondering if Unix and Linux are very similar, as I
would rarther purchase it, and have the dual OS on my computer to trial and
test in my own time at home.

Thanks

"Unix" comes in several different popular but proprietary flavours e.g. HPUX
(HPCompaq) , AIX (IBM) etc...
Some are just impressive e.g. Sun Solaris 9 (I think you can download a free
copy these days , not sure )
Whilst others are not publicly available anymore e.g. Dec's Ultrix
There is a legend i.e. Berkeley's BSD ( Berkeley's www.freebsd.org )
And there is this tidal wave , Linux
At some point you will need to know what shell you are using , Bourne-shell
or C-Shell ?
It is my believe that if you get into Linux, it will give you a solid
foundation.
And yes, you can dual-boot your machine using Lilo (yea yea yea, I hear the
objections already ...)
I am sure many others on this forum will know much much more, but start at the
beginning !
