rpm --initdb

Could get much info from the man of rpm, so I'll ask here. What does this 
command exactly do:

# rpm --initdb --root=/home/martin/cache/

I have the source of a distro, and the script for creating the distro from the 
source uses this comand, and I don't want to scatch my WS.
