hello:
i have had a most unusual problem when upgrading two different machines from
redhat 7.1 to redhat 7.2. in both cases, i migrated to ext3 file systems from
ext2.
machine one: workstation
uniprocessor amd 550mhz
asus P5A mother board
3 ibm disks (DNES-309170W, DCAS-34333W, and DDRS39130D)
1 pioneer cdrom (DR-766)
1 scanner (astra umax 2200)
2 scsi cards (2940UW2 for drives, 2940 for scsi scanner)
1 Matrox Mystic (1064SG, rev. 3)
1 Ensoniq ES1371 audio card
when this upgrade finished, it had put on two kernels, one for smp (default)
and one for uniprocessor. the smp kernel would not boot; i could get the
uniprocessor kernel to boot, so i made it the default, and moved on. then i
tried to mount a cd (the rh 7.2 cd binary #2) with unexpected results, both
from my normal user and root, same results:
$ mount /mnt/cdrom
mount: /dev/cdrom: unknown device
(yes there is a cd in the drive.)
appropriate line in fstab:
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,user,owner,ro 0 0
$ ls -ld /mnt/cdrom
drwxrwxr-x 2 root root 4096 Oct 9 1998 /mnt/cdrom
$ ll /dev/cdrom
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 Sep 13 07:53 /dev/cdrom -> scd0
$ ll /dev/scd0
brw------- 1 root disk 11, 0 Aug 30 13:30 /dev/scd0
nothing stands out:
meantime, i am upgrading my server, which is
amd 350 mhz
asus P5A
NEC CD-ROM DRIVE 466
7 IBM SCSI Drives (1 - DCAS-32160W, 6 - DCAS-34330W )
1 Adaptec 2940 SCSI controller
1 Matrox Graphics 1064SG Mystique (r 3)
1 3Com Corporation 3c900 Combo [Boomerang]
2 3Com Corporation 3c905B 100BaseTX [Cyclone]
after the installation completed on this machine, in addition to not having
the use of the cd as in the case of the workstation, two of the users cannot
log in (root and a normal user). the other normal user on that system logs in
ok.
the biggest question is how do i get the password problem fixed.... (uses
shadow passwords)?
and then the next question, is what happened to the cdroms.....?
thanks in advance for any and all assistance.....
