running program in background

Could somebody please remind me how to run a program (in this case, SETI) from the command line such that it will stay running when I close the window?

Also, is there a way I can dynamically alter the amount of processor time a given program will take?

I wish I could remember all this stuff. Linux documentation is like American roadsigns - useful if you already know where you're going.

Thanks in advance !
