anyone tried IEEE1394 on linux ?

Has anyone out there tried FireWiring Linux ? I read it is supported in
kernel version 2.4.x
Could you share your experience :
(1) chipset and installation
(2) promised vs actual speed of serial bus
(3) reliability
(4) anyone tried a "daisy-chain " of fire-wired devices which includes
a CD_RW ?
