eth0 failure

Hi-- can anyone suggest how to diagnose a problem with the eth0 interface 
on a RH7.2 intel machine?
The symptoms:
--Unreliable, almost nonexistance network connectivity, fixed by a re-boot
--repeated reports in /var/log/messages:   "eth0:  card reports no 
resources"  during the time of network outage
this began happening about three hours after system power-down in which I 
installed an external SCSI tape drive.  Rebooting the machine has fixed the 
problem for the moment, but I I'm afraid that there may be a hardware problem.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
