[OT] Pentium I mobo can't detect ATA-100 drive

I am trying to install a spare ATA-100 30GB hard drive in an old P166
system. But I can't get the BIOS to autodetect the drive. When I
user-define the parameters, the BIOS hangs on boot.
Is there any hope for using the onboard controller, or do I need to run
out and buy one? Exploiting the ATA-100 speed is not a real issue.
Thanks.
