VESA VGA Graphic Console and Monitor Power Save Mode

On my Red Hat 7.3 and 7.2 systems XWindows is NOT running.
When NOT using the frame buffer device (normal VGA console), the following
command will cause the monitor to go into standby/power-save mode after 10
minutes:
/usr/bin/setterm -powersave powerdown -powerdown 10
It appears that /usr/bin/setterm -powersave does NOT work when I am using the
VESA VGA graphics console frame buffer. (Which I invoke with 'vga=794' at
boot time.)
How do I enable a monitor power-save mode when using the VESA VGA graphics
console frame buffer?
