Unfortunately the OpenOffice README doesn't explain how the install
procedure works. Google turned up this page:
http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/setup-linux.html
That page basically tells you to do a network setup using
# ./setup /net
as root from the install directory as unpacked from the .tar.gz archive.
This will install the application files in a directory of your choice,
for example /opt/OpenOffice.org1.0.
Then, run
$ /opt/OpenOffice.org1.0/programs/setup
as a normal user. You'll have to select the option to put about 2 MB of
files into a directory in your home directory. From that point on,
everything worked. Run /opt/OpenOffice.org1.0/programs/soffice to start
the core application.
I didn't get any symlinks or Gnome menu options, I had to create those
by hand.
Hope this helps,
Omer
