Look at the man page to see details of getting everything to work
smoothly, like letting you do ctrl-A to get to beginning of line in
emacs. Gotta figure that out. I haven't.
^A followed by "a" works pretty nicely for me. :-)
I suppose you can probably rebind screen's ^A to another character--but
it seems too much bother.
