First off you are using the NVidia drivers from NVIDIA, so you [if you
haven't] you will need to reinstall the NVidia X drivers. Second, you
will have to make sure that you have installed the kernel-sources rpm,
this should be the correct sources for your running RH kernel. [if you
haven't] then in the NVidia kernel module dir, run a 'make clean', then
a 'make'. These are the steps I took when I upgraded from 7.3 to 8.0,
and i had no problems.
Actually - I use an XFS kernel, and it's custom, so I ended up
rebuilding my kernel, then remaking the NVidia driver. It pencil's out
about the same, but if you still have problems you might look in
/usr/src/linux/Makefile for what CC Redhat is using. They used to use
kgcc [from the RPM compat-gcc], to build the kernel. If they still do
you will need to update the NVidia drivers Makefile. -OR- pay attention
because the NVIDIA drivers may be being compiled with 'kgcc', and the
real kernel is built w/ gcc, so in that case you would need to tell the
NVidia drivers to use 'gcc' instead of 'kgcc'.
I would like to give you a much more precise answer, but I have been
using XFS w/ my own kernels for so long, I don't remember anymore.
