Printing in landscape with CUPS

Is there a trick to getting CUPS to print in landscape orientation?  I
am having some problems printing in landscape.  I have been trying to
narrow it down.

lp -d <printer> <filename>
prints fine

lp -d <printer> -o landscape <filename>
outputs blank pages

I have tried this on multiple printers -- LaserJet 4M and LaserJet 4si
-- with the same results so I don't think that it is a PPD file issue.

Any tips on getting this working?
