of course the most ideal solution is to get switch/cables
that are compatible so that they autonegotiate to 100Mbit
full duplex. I can't remember the last time(if ever) I had
an enviornment where the cards could not autonegotiate
to this on their own.

donald becker(developer of many of the linux ethernet
drivers, the one big exception would be the e100/e1000 driver)
strongly urges against forcing cards to any particular
setting(at least he has said so numerous times on the eepro100
mailing list), it is likely to cause more problems then it
prevents.

what kind of switches are you using? my switch here at home
is an extreme networks summit 48, my switches at my last
place of employment were extreme networks and cisco 2900 & 3500.
the switches provide an easy way to check link settings.

screenshot from my summit:

(port 4 is in 10mbit/half duplex since thats all my laptop's
PCMCIA NIC can do, and port 7 is fried, note to self don't
trip over ethernet cables plugged into an expensive switch)
