try giving noapic and acpi=off in grub.conf
it worked nice for me
and there are few smp related bugs
in RH - 8
try upgrading to latest kernel from
redhat which should help you
I am using 2.4.18-19 its working fine
or try to run your system in runlevel 3 and not 5
cos tht also created problem for me
I usually boot the system in runlevel 3 and do
a startx when I need it.
Hiten.
