RH 8.0 ethernet aliases wierdness

I have 6 ethernet aliases setup on a redhat 8.0 box.  All show up fine
and work fine.  (ifconfig shows them all etc) I added a seventh, and
ifup'ed the interface.  I can bind services to the IP, the machine
responds on the IP, but I can't find any evidence that the alias is
there.  ifconfig doesn't show it, nothing I can find in /proc shows it. 
I can't ifdown the interface either.  It's a production server so a
reboot is very undersireable.  Any thoughts on this?
