Thank you, this is most excellent.  Fortunately, the console applications I
mentioned all begin to work with 16 colors (i.e. bright) immediately and
bold is restored to basicly b&w console applications such as joe and man.

I've googled for this for about a week without managing to find the above
link.

Now - on to remapping the keyboard to ANSI.
