Mouse Cursors and Redhat 9

I have been wanting to change the X cursors to something other than the
four provided.  I have found a number of interesting ones, but I have
not been able to get them to work.

First of all, there is no way in the Gnome mouse preferences to add
mouse cursors.

The mouse cursors that are used appear to be in someplace other than
/usr/share/icons or /usr/X11R6/lib/icons. 

I cannot find any documentation on this on Redhat.com.  (Part of this is
because the search seems to list oldest first, so I have to deal with
stuff from the 5.2 days.)

Is there a FAQ on this or some other reference I am missing?

And, yes, I paid the $60 to get an early copy.  (And I will be getting a
boxed set when they reach the stores.)
