You'd probably get more responses to this question on the redhat-devel 
lists, or a numerical analysis & computation list. Try getting into 
contact with FermiLab in the US, I recall a substantial leaning towards 
computational clusters there, and they would almost certainly be 
continuing such work with Linux.

Also try giving a quick call/email to the Linux cluster manufacturers 
that advertise in the Linux mags.  While this sort of knowlege is part 
of their offering, they might be willing to share for free.  Of course, 
they'll like you more if you have a hardware budget. :-)
