Just finished putting RH8.1 on a Compaq Presario 900 and had similar
problems. I discovered it was easiest to scrub the drive and install RH8.1,
then partition and area for XP. This worked well and I've had no problems.
I ran into all types of problems when first putting RH8.0 on top of XP -
kernel issues, partition issues, etc.
Good luck.

Subject: Installation question (free space above first partition)
Hi all,
I've got a bit of a problem with a new installation of RH8. We've got a
Compaq Evo D510 that comes preinstalled with either Win2K or XP. When we
partition the disk, we have free space at the top of the partition table. Is
this correct and will it interfere with the bootloader? When we try and make
other partitions Disk Druid tells us that there could be problems with the
bootloader, presumably due to this free space.
Anyone got any ideas?
