'ln -s /dev/hdc /dev/cdrom' will show no output if it is successful. Are you
sure running 'ls -l /dev/cdrom' still shows nothing AFTER doing the ln
command?

My output from 'ls -l /dev/cdrom' looks like this:

lrwxrwxrwx   1   root   root   8 Apr 12   2001 /dev/cdrom -> /dev/hdc
