Oddly enough, I had a similar problem on an smp development box
running Rawhide (beta) when I tried to upgrade to the new and
improved glibc set. Lots of "I can only do PRIVATE_DB" type
messages, rpm only worked from user accounts (not root) and no
ability to reverse the glibc change.
I ended up putting an old 7.3 install CD in yon CD slot and using
the rescue mode to do an overwrite of the previous glibc rpm set.
All common sense said that that should not have worked, but it did
so, and in the process rescued my Christmas.
You might try to see if this works for you.
regards,
ben
P.S.
As long as I am writing to the list, has anyone else had problems
getting the gcc pseudoassembler (asm) to consistently handle
dword division ??
