1 MTA, ie. qmail, is hardly "lots of MTAs". On the contrary, most modern
SMTP servers support SMTP AUTH. The list includes sendmail, exim,
courier and postfix. qmail was written in 1996. For its day, it was very
advanced. But it has failed to adapt, and it supports many useful
features only with patching, which is a bit of a black art with all the
different patches floating around. You should really consider moving
away from qmail.
