A coworker of mine just complained about this the other day.  It turns
out that it might be a VIA chipset issue, and the short answer is he's
screwed for the time being.  The 2.4 kernel still has some IDE driver
issues that might be resolved in the 2.5 series.  He's looking at
replacing his motherboard...
