In theroy the 2.4 kernel supports a rather large number of cpu. (In
the range of 32 or 64. I've forgotten as I've never used more than 8.)
Scaling is another matter. Depending on what you are doing linux tops
out around 4-8 cpus. Of course this all changes with numa under 2.6
kernels.
