Hi,
I am experiencing problems with my RedHat 9. I have been using RedHat
for a long time already and I installed the version 9 some time ago -
without problems. In the last two weeks some commands aren't working
anymore. "Halt" is one of them. I am not able to shutdown RedHat anymore
(if I choose to shutdown at the login screen, the system just returns to
this screen and does nothing; if I try to shutdown in a shell window it
doesn't work as well).
If I try to reboot the system, I have similiar problems. In this case,
however, the system does try to reboot, but at the end I get the message
"INIT: no more processes left in this runlevel" and I have to turn off
the computer.
Other error messages by rebooting:
"/etc/rc6.d/S01reboot: line 64 /sbin/halt: Input/output error"
"/etc/rc6.d/S01reboot: line 204 /sbin/halt: Input/output error"
"/etc/rc6.d/S01reboot: line 204: exec /sbin/reboot: cannot execute:
Input/output error".
When a do a "ls" command at "/sbin" directory all the "commands with
problems" - like halt - are listed like that:
"halt: Input/output error"
Reading some messages on newsgroups I decided to run fsck. The problems
could not be solved and now some commands (like halt) disappeared from
/sbin. I think if I copy new versions of those programs to /sbin the
problems would be solved, but I don't know where to find them (I am
having problems also with chgrp, localtime, stty and others).
I thank for any comment on my problem. And sorry for my confused message
and my poor English.
Afonso
