Modules.conf entries are unlikely to help with a lockup. Is X locking up,
or the kernel? Are you using KDE or Gnome?
Ah, well at least I'll stop getting those countless system mails about
the problem those entries were meant to solve.
Well, I'm not entirely sure. Everything just stops. When it locks, about
a 1 second loop of sound is endlessy repeated. I can't get to tty1-6, so
I dunno. I use KDE (please for the love of the gods people, don't ask why).
If you are using KDE, and you start GAIM as 'artsdsp gaim' does that help?
Um, I dunno. The lockup will happen randomly (e.g. hard to repeat the
events that cause each lockup, and it doesn't always happen). I just
usually hit alt+F2 and type in gaim (same with XMMS).
artsdsp is a script that attempts to reroute calls to /dev/dsp through the
sound server. The soundserver locks /dev/dsp when it is in use, and can
prevent non arts aware programs from accessing the sound device.
GAIM is currently set to go through ESD (no selection for afts, only
console beep, command, ESD or internal).
You might try the same thing with xmms as well.
90% of the time, XMMS doesn't do anything. I have it set to play throuh
the OSS driver (I can choose the disk writer plugin, eSound Output
plugin or the OSS driver).
There is a similar script for Gnome, called "esddsp"
I'll try the artsdsp gaim trick and see if that doesn't help.
Sorry, I don't use either application here, so I haven't seen this
problem.
Is all good.
