Here's the httpd.conf
<Directory />
Options FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride None
</Directory>
<Directory "/var/www/html">
Options Indexes Includes FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride All
Order allow,deny
Allow from all
</Directory>
.htaccess
AuthType Basic
AuthName "Secure area"
AuthUserFile /somewhere/save/.htpasswd
require valid-user
To use .htaccess you must allowoverride auth and
something else can't quite
remember.
But this is my setup.

That's not going to ask for a usrname and passwd.
You'll a need .htaccess file in that dir with the right
info.
And a .htpasswd file with user names and passwd's.
AuthType Basic
AuthName "Secure area"
AuthUserFile /.htpasswd
require valid-user

Did you remember to restart Apache after making changes
to httpd.conf?
