What do you mean by "crashing at fsck"? If you mean fsck fails, and it
wants you to enter the root password to go into maintence mode, I can
understand that. To fix the problem, you will need to look at
/etc/fstab, and see what mounts use the second drive. Depending on how
your system is set up, you may not be able to remove the second hard
drive without a bit of work first. If parts of the system are mounted
on the second hard drive, you will have to relocate them before removing
the drive.
Now, if you are using partition labels, it may be hard to tell from
reading fstab what is on the second drive. You can use mount or df
commands to see what is mounted where.
