I was having the same problem when I first was trying to setup Samba. Even
though I am using RH8.0 I found the following link and the information
within to be very helpful. In your case I believe (I am just a begginer)
that the %S is looking for a Samba password file to authenticate. You may
not have this password file set up. The information in the link below
explains how to do this so they are encrypted and compatible with WinNT SP3
or higher, Win2K, and WinXP.

Not to the level of perfection that I would like, but workable for now.
Since this is a private network with only my wife and I using it, I'm not
all that worried about security (except from outside our network, of
course).
By removing the line
Valid users = %S
from the [homes] section of smb.conf, I was able to set it up so that we can
browse to our home directories without Windows popping up a login box for
"Guest".
This has worked for now so that I can read and write files whether I'm going
in to my share from Linux or Windows. I'd like to implement a more secure
solution at some point, but this works for now.
