Re: Netscape 7.0 does not recognize Java plugin.

This is a problem that Linus had mentioned back in 1999. He said that in
order to "win" the war with MS, we have to make it easy enough for our
grandparents to install and more games for kids. Here we are in 2003,
and in order to get java working, you have to go to the command line and
enter ln -s. Do you think my grandmother can figure that out? That is
why Windows is dominating. Not because it is stable, or because it is
simple enough for my grandmother to install and there is a plethora (I
love that word, ;-) ) of kids games. Until Linux can become simple to
install and have plugins like RealPlayer, Java, et al, easy to install
the way Windows does, Linux will stay relegated to "geek" O/S. Mind you,
I have got my girlfriend using it now, but I had to configure everything
for her first. There is no way she would know to download java, install
it via the rpm, go to the subdirectory for netscape or mozilla and ln -s
back to the java directory. Never mind trying to get realplayer to work.
I have long wanted to abandon Windows all together, but have had to stay
with a dual boot, so my kids could play games. We need to make this a
lot simpler so that anyone can install programs to linux without having
to tar xzvf, cd directory, ./configure, make clean, make, make install.
While it works for me, looking at the average joe, he is really going to
bollux his system up.
Just my .02.
