I have had the same problem but with a joystick :-),
and I realised that my old kernel (default in RH 7.3
2.4.18-3), didn't have the USB driver enabled.

Look at your kernel configuration, maybe you don't
have "usb keyboard HIDBP" enable, by default I think
that it is not mark.
