My /etc/sysconfig/desktop looks like:
DESKTOP="KDE"
DISPLAYMANAGER="KDE"

Just those two lines.
If that doesn't work, try running kdm from runlevel 3 and see if it 
loads. If it doesn't, then you have a problem.
