Looks like It worked.

It takes a while for sync to occur since network response times vary.

after running ntpd for 10 minutes or so 

try ntpq -p 

what does it show? 

It will show the servers defined and how many times it has reached them
and whether they are close enough to sync with.  documentation, if
installed from redhatrpm is in /usr/share/doc/ntpd-version and is in
html format,
