tape usage

Hai,
i am facing some problem with my tape in RH9.
i mean i can eject the tape using
mt -f /dev/st0 eject
and i get the status using
mt -f /dev/st0 status.... command

but i cannot perform any input output commands 

neither can i use the tar utility to read the tape.

my tape is Tandberg slr6 - SCSI
