Well, I tend to do three things:
subscriber-only posting
this prevents random spammers submitting stuff unless they
pretend to be one of the users on your list
restrict the list membership listing command to the list admin
require new subscribers to confirm subscription - that way a
valid and monitored mailbox is needed for someone to join,
which prevents most robotic subscription processes
But that's about all.
