openldap and cron

We are running an ldap server on Redhat ES 2.1 es.  This is the one
loaded from the redhat es channel.
We are having problems with Redhat 3.0 AS/ES with cron. The following
appears in the cron log -- after which the
crond daemon appears to die.

Dec  2 10:13:00 lando crond[30378]: nss_ldap: reconnecting to LDAP
server...
Dec  2 10:13:00 lando crond[30378]: nss_ldap: reconnected to LDAP server
after 1 attempt(s)

Any help would be appreciated.
