If u have installed GRUB,

           at the OS boot selection menu type 'a' after selecting 'Linux'.  Then type init 1.  This will boot u into a shell with all priviledges.  This is the single user mode.  Now just change ur password. and reboot

 

If u have installed LILO,

           type ctrl-x at the OS boot selection menu and type linux 1.  This will also have the same effect as above.
