I took a closer look at either a "top" or "ps awfxu", display being
logged in via ssh, and saw that "gpm" was flagged with an "R" a ways
down in the list. I then switched the keyboard-mouse-monitor switch
back to the machine in question and instantly saw the load start to
decline.
