Way too many variables for us to be able to help you with this one. You
don't say anything about your processor speed, whether or not you're
running X, what daemons are running, etc., usw.
In general adding more memory will increase your system's apparent
speed, not because it runs faster, but because it can keep more in
memory.
Adding more swap space when you need more memory will NOT help. Nor
will adding lots more memory when your processor is just too slow to
handle the requests it's getting.
What's your processor? Processor speed?
Are you running X? Desktop aps? Server aps?
